A guide to choosing a wig, courtesy of Hairware

Gareth Bushell

As a leading UK wig supplier, we’ve helped thousands of people to purchase their ideal wig, hairpiece or accessory, so it’s fair to say that we know a thing or two about wigs.

If only buying a wig was as easy as choosing one, ordering it and placing it on your head. Even if it isn’t your first time purchasing a wig, there are still several things you will have to consider – all in the interest of you feeling and looking your best, of course.

Think of the 4 Cs...

...the 4 Cs being cut, cap size, composition and colour. These are the four main factors you’ll have to consider when choosing a wig.

‘Cut’ may be the easiest of the lot to think about. You’ll likely already have a rough idea of what sort of hair style you want – regardless of whether it mirrors your usual, natural style. Hairware stocks wigs of all shapes and sizes, including everything from bobs and beehives to clip-on buns, so you might end up stuck for choice.

If you fancy something different, we offer both viewing appointments and private consultations – feel free to contact us about them.

Cap size is a bit trickier to tackle. The cap should be snug yet comfortable, while still looking like your natural scalp. It’s a lot to worry about, but Hairware’s extensive range of wigs has you (quite literally) covered.

As a guide, ‘average’ wig sizes tend to suit around 95% of our customers, but we also stock large and petite cap wigs. If you have any doubts whatsoever about choosing a cap size, please contact us.

Next up is composition. Composition concerns the hair type of the wig, as well as how the wig is structured.

Wigs tend to be made of synthetic hair, human hair or a blend of both. All types come with their own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice you make ultimately depends on your personal requirements.

There are also a variety of different cap constructions to consider with regard to wig composition. Each is essentially a different method of attaching the hair to the cap, and again comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. Hairware stocks the most common forms of cap construction; basic/classic cap, lace front, monofilament and 100% hand tied.

Again, if you’re feeling stuck, just contact our team for help.

Last but not least is colour. You may wish to match your wig to your natural hair colour, but there’s nothing wrong with experimenting a little bit. We stock wigs in practically every colour of the rainbow, so you’re bound to find the perfect one for you.
